Preamble

In these pages I will attempt to bring together everything that I have discovered about the Balfry community in over 30 years of searching.
Select broad subjects from the Tabs below and please post comments or additions to make this record as complete as possible. And do contact me if you have any observations to make.
John Balfry Davies

Strays

Searches have turned up the following Balfrys who cannot be placed on the existing trees.
Can anyone suggest where they belong?

1. William Balfry,  1766. Recorded in the Parish of Tuogh (SW of Limerick near Adare) with a household of 6. [1766 Religious Census of Catholic Families]. Possibly the William who married Mary Fitzmaurice in 1786 or a brother of Philip.

2. William Balfrey, 1852. [New York Passenger lists]. Male, Age 45, Born 1807, Labourer, Dep. Liverpool, Arrival 31 Dec. 1852 on ship "Siddons"

3. William Balfrey, 1834.[New York Passenger lists]. Male, Age 33, Born 1801, Arrival 1834 on ship "Hopewell", Accompanied by Bridget & John.

4. Wm Belfry, 1850. [Irish Famine Immigrants 1846-1851]. Male, Born 1830, Dep. Liverpool, Arrival 4 June 1850 on ship "London".

5. William Balfry, 1864. [Ireland Marriages 1845-1958]. registration Year 1864, Registration District Mallow (about 35 Km N of Cork), Vol. 10 page 360, (Married one of Mary Rorke, Biddy Haley, Julia M'Carthy, Ellen Walsh, Biddy Blake). Might be the William bapt. 1833 son of John Balfry and Margaret Stack.

6. Ellen Bolfrey and family in Philadelphia. (US Census 1900)
Ellen; Head, widow; b. June 1849, Ireland; age 50; 7 Children, 4 living; Entered USA 1865 aged 16
     John; T or F  b. Dec 1870,  Pennsylvania; age 29; Baker
     William E,; b. Dec 1873, Penn. age 26; Baker
     Kate M. .; b. Aug 1876, Penn; age 23; Stocking maker
Ella, O.; b. Apr 1880, Penn age 20; Stocking maker.

I cannot find this family in any other census. Possibly a name misspell somewhere. Is it possible that Ellen is the same as the Ellen Walsh who married William Balfry (No 5 above)? In which case she would have been 15 at marriage. Then the couple emigrated the following year. Alternately, she may have entered USA with her family and later met and married an unknown Balfry. When did husband  die - after 1880 presumably.

7. Mary Bolfry died 1874, in Fermoy, Cork (possibly in Cloyne Workhouse). Born 1794. Possibly the dau. of George Balfry and Eleanor O'Donnell, bapt. July 9 1795. Found through findmypast.co.uk
